Today, let's briefly explore why women should have the right to make this decision themselves—and only themselves. As absurd as it may sound in today's world, women do not have this freedom everywhere.
The Right to Self-Determination
The right to abortion does not mean that women must or should terminate their pregnancies; it’s about giving them the choice. When women choose to have an abortion, they are often in a difficult life situation. Some may lack the necessary social networks or financial means to manage a pregnancy and raise a child. Others may have experienced sexual abuse or unwanted pregnancies due to assault or inadequate contraception.
In such cases, it should be self-evident that a woman has the right to decide on an abortion.
Of course, men play a role in many important aspects of a woman's life, but when it comes to an abortion, the decision lies solely with the woman. She is the one who must bear the physical and emotional consequences of a pregnancy.
Medical Risks of Abortion
When performed by qualified medical personnel in a medically safe environment, abortions are safe, and women do not suffer health impairments from them. Most complications related to abortions stem from inadequate hygiene or lack of medical care.
In many countries where abortions are illegal or only performed under restrictive conditions, there is a high risk of unwanted health consequences for women. These can range from infections and bleeding to severe complications like infertility and even death.
Why Abortion is Not Murder
The claim that abortion is murder is often made by anti-abortion advocates and religious groups, who argue that a fetus's life should be protected from the moment of conception. However, this is not so simple. There is no universally accepted definition of when life begins or when a fetus is considered a person. Furthermore, an abortion can only be performed within approximately twelve weeks after conception, which is long before the fetus is viable or its brain is sufficiently developed.
The fact is: abortion is not the same as murder. Murder refers to the intentional killing of a person, while abortion aims to terminate a pregnancy.
Closing Words
Women should always have the right to decide about their own bodies and lives. There is nothing more to be said.
