Some people avoid chocolate, others say chips are bad. Some completely cut out carbs, while others claim fat is the culprit. Let’s take a closer look at why it’s problematic to demonize specific foods or nutrients.
As always, the dose makes the poison
Every food has its place in a balanced diet. Even foods that many people consider “unhealthy” or “bad” can be enjoyed in moderation. Sweets, fast food, or other processed foods can be part of a balanced diet as long as they don’t become the main component of what we eat.
The issue doesn’t lie in individual foods or nutrients themselves but in how we consume them. Excessive intake of sugar, fat, or carbohydrates can lead to a calorie surplus, which over time can cause weight gain and health problems. The real problem isn’t the candy or the greasy burger, but what we’re not eating in their place.
Psychological Effects
Labeling foods as “bad” or “forbidden” makes us feel guilty when we do eat them. This can set the stage for an unhealthy relationship with food. It’s much better to develop a healthy balance, recognizing that no food is inherently bad—it’s all about portion sizes and overall eating habits.
This is especially important for children. Teaching them to fear certain foods or nutrients can lead to disordered eating habits as adults. So, let your child enjoy a candy bar every now and then. Teach them what a balanced diet looks like, and show them that they can enjoy all types of food in moderation.

Closing Words
Aim for about 80% of your nutrients to come from mostly unprocessed foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and plenty of healthy fats and fiber. Then it’s absolutely fine if the remaining 20% of your diet consists of sweets, chips, or other snacks. Time for a chocolate bar! 🍫
