December 18, 2022
I don't really want to review the year this time. War, energy crisis, high inflation and still the COVID-19 pandemic. And a look into the future doesn't really look any better. Even if we get a handle on all the issues I just mentioned, there's still too less being done about climate change.
And we have to do something about it. After all, we are also to blame. It is scientifically proven and well established that human activities are the main cause of ongoing global warming.
The first effects of climate change are already partially noticeable today:
Melting of the ice masses
Rise of the sea level
Oceans acidification
Climate extremes
Some animal and plant species are threatened with extinction
Food shortages and hunger crises
Environmental migration
It is difficult to think positively. But negative thoughts don't get us anywhere either.
So my appeal to everyone is that we need to live more sustainably.
I know that the main contributors to climate change are the big corporations and that something urgently needs to be done about it there.
But that doesn't mean it's unnecessary if we live sustainably. Our purchasing decisions also play a role. And every ton of CO₂ saved counts.
Furthermore, large companies are responding to pressure from consumers and investors, and are compelled to adapt their business models and practices to the challenges of climate change. If enough people make and demand sustainable choices, this can help corporations change their practices and reduce their environmental impact.
It's time to take action. Here are things everyone can do:
Buy more consciously
Throw away less (repair defective devices if possible)
Find sustainable alternatives (e.g. drink tap water)
Buy seasonally and regionally (But don't get confused: Despite the BIO label, the eco-balance can still be shit)
Use public transportation instead of driving (I know, it's not always possible)
Use environmentally friendly products (e.g. body care products)
Sustainable means not only environmentally friendly, but also socially acceptable. In other words, buying products that people have produced under fair conditions. It is clear to me that this is not always possible (especially now that prices are constantly rising).
However, if you consume less unnecessarily and repair items instead of throwing them away, the additional costs for fair and regional products quickly balance out.
Optimistic thinking is a weakness of mine, but I will do everything I can to be part of the solution, not the problem. Because giving up or looking away is not an option.
And as a reminder, even though the other crises have replaced the pandemic as the all-dominant crisis, please do not forget that COVID-19, as well as influenza and other infectious diseases, are still present and a lot of people are getting sick right now.
So remember:
Stay at home if you are sick
Get vaccinated
Keep your distance
Wear FFP2 mouth nasal masks if you have cold symptoms
Test regularly
