December 21, 2021
The year 2021 was marked by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which began in 2020. This year saw large vaccination campaigns launched to combat the spread of the virus. Let’s briefly look at what we have achieved so far.
Progress in Vaccinations
Over 57% of the global population has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. More than 3.6 billion people are fully vaccinated. A central issue remains the poorer countries, where vaccination rates are still low. Only 8.1% of the population in these countries has received at least one dose, indicating that there is still a long way to go to increase vaccination rates worldwide. And as we know, high infection rates make the emergence of virus variants more likely. Therefore, investment is also needed here to ensure that all people worldwide have access to vaccines.
Personal Perspective
As a person who has been vaccinated three times and follows all recommended measures, I can personally feel some relief regarding the risk of severe illness or a prolonged COVID-19 infection. However, there is still concern that global health systems could become overwhelmed if new virus variants continue to spread rapidly.
This year has also been very challenging due to conspiracy theories surrounding the pandemic and vaccinations. Despite scientific findings and the success of vaccines, some people still cling to their misinformation. I stopped discussing with such individuals a long time ago, as a rational conversation with them is simply not possible.
