Testosterone enanthate is an anabolic steroid used by bodybuilders and athletes to increase muscle mass and performance. I generally advise against the use of anabolic steroids. However, since sooner or later almost everyone contemplates this topic, let’s take a look at the facts today. This article is for informational purposes only.
There is a wide variety of anabolic steroids, such as Deca-Durabolin, Dianabol, Trenbolone, and many more. In this article, we will focus on testosterone enanthate, probably the most popular and widely used anabolic steroid, partly because it is a natural hormone that the body already produces. As the primary sex hormone, testosterone plays a crucial role in muscle growth and strength development.
Unlike orally taken steroids like Dianabol or Winstrol, which seem easier to take, testosterone enanthate has fewer side effects because it is injected and not metabolized by the liver. Also, compared to other injectable steroids like Trenbolone, testosterone enanthate has the least side effects.
What is Testosterone Enanthate?
Testosterone enanthate is a synthetic steroid derived from testosterone. It is an ester of testosterone, which means it has a longer half-life than testosterone itself. This means it is metabolized more slowly in the body, thus providing a longer duration of action.
Testosterone enanthate is commonly used by bodybuilders and athletes to increase muscle mass and performance. It is also used medically and prescribed for the treatment of hypogonadism, a condition in which the body does not produce enough testosterone.
The Mechanism of Action of Testosterone Enanthate
Testosterone enanthate binds to androgen receptors in the muscles, promoting protein synthesis. It improves nitrogen retention in the body, leading to increased nitrogen storage in muscle tissue. This contributes to more effective recovery and accelerated muscle growth.
Testosterone enanthate also has an anabolic effect on bone metabolism. It increases bone density, thereby potentially reducing the risk of fractures.
These were the positive effects of testosterone enanthate. However, we should not overlook the possible side effects.
The Possible Side Effects of Testosterone Enanthate
Common side effects that may occur shortly after starting use include acne, hair loss, mood swings, and increased aggression. In addition, there may be an enlargement of the prostate and a decrease in sperm production.
The use of testosterone enanthate may also increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It can elevate cholesterol levels and increase blood pressure, which in turn may lead to a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The individual reaction to testosterone enanthate can vary, and the aforementioned side effects do not have to occur in every user. Nevertheless, it is advisable to seek thorough medical consultation before using testosterone enanthate to carefully weigh the potential risks and benefits.
When Is the First Steroid Cycle Worthwhile?
One should only consider the first steroid cycle after gaining sufficient training experience. A rough guideline is that you should have consistently and structured trained for at least 3-5 years to naturally build your physical fitness, strength, and muscle mass. During this time, you also had the opportunity to learn and master the correct execution of exercises.
Which Dosage Is Recommended and How Is It Taken?
The recommended dosage of testosterone enanthate varies depending on the user’s experience and goals. For beginners, a dosage of 250-500 mg per week is recommended. Experienced users may take up to 1000 mg per week. As always, higher dosages are also associated with an increased risk of side effects.
Testosterone enanthate is usually administered via intramuscular injection. The standard interval for injections is typically 5 to 6 days to maintain a stable testosterone level in the body. However, some athletes prefer weekly injections. Usually, a cycle lasts about 8 to 16 weeks.
For long-term use of testosterone enanthate, lower dosages are required to maintain a stable testosterone level. Some athletes also choose to combine testosterone enanthate with other substances. It is important to introduce additional substances gradually and avoid overloading the body. And don’t forget: More substances = More side effects.
It is also essential to administer injections at different sites on the body to avoid the formation of abscesses or inflammation. Regularly changing injection sites, such as between the thighs, the gluteus, or the upper outer quadrant of the gluteus, can help reduce potential complications.
Post-Cycle Therapy (PCT) After Testosterone Enanthate Cycle
After a testosterone enanthate cycle, a recovery phase is essential. It is recommended to take a longer break of at least 8-12 weeks, during which anabolic steroids should be avoided. This break allows the body to regenerate and restore natural hormone production.
A post-cycle therapy (PCT) can be supportive. Medications like tamoxifen or clomiphene are used to normalize hormone levels and stimulate testosterone production. These medications can help control estrogen levels and reduce side effects such as gynecomastia.
Maintaining Muscle Mass After a Steroid Cycle
Personally, I have no experience with the use of testosterone enanthate or other anabolic steroids, as I have never used them. Besides the possible side effects, another reason is that when using anabolic steroids, the principle of "all or nothing" applies. A single cycle shows only minimal effects and therefore appears to be of little value.
It is well known that the human body has a natural limit for muscle growth. If this limit is exceeded during a steroid cycle, it does not lead to long-term gains. The muscle mass gained from using steroids can be considered a temporary increase. While the muscles do not immediately disappear after the cycle, they gradually diminish over several weeks/months.
By using anabolic steroids, one can lift more weight and build more muscle mass. However, when the intake of steroids is stopped, one may gradually lift less weight, and the muscles shrink again. In the worst-case scenario, the body’s own testosterone production may be completely halted after the cycle, and it takes some time for it to recover to a normal level. This can result in potentially less strength than before and looking worse than before. For this reason, individual cycles are useless, and this is also why most people undergo multiple cycles and combine them with other anabolic substances. If someone claims to have done only one cycle and looks like a mountain, they are likely lying.
Therefore, the "all or nothing" principle applies here.
Professional Advice and Education
If you are considering the use of anabolic steroids like testosterone enanthate, it is important to seek professional advice from a qualified doctor. A preliminary examination can determine whether you are physically suitable for the use of anabolic steroids. Additionally, your doctor can provide information on the appropriate dosage, duration of use, and possible accompanying measures such as post-cycle therapy.
Is the Use of Steroids Cheating?
Studies show that simply taking steroids without training and only engaging in normal daily activities builds more muscle than individuals who do not use steroids and train intensively. A combination of intense training and steroid use naturally promotes muscle growth even more significantly.
Thus, muscle building with steroids becomes significantly easier. While you still have to work hard to build a lot of muscle mass, it is undeniable that steroids make the process considerably easier. Steroids can be seen as a sort of "shortcut" that allows for faster and more effective muscle growth. They push the body beyond its natural limits, providing a significant advantage over those who do not use steroids.
I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s cheating, but one fact is clear: You cannot compare a natural bodybuilder with a bodybuilder who uses substances. That would be unfair and equivalent to cheating. A clear distinction is necessary here.

Closing Words
Unless you are pursuing a career in bodybuilding and merely want to enhance your appearance for the ladies, I strongly advise against the use of testosterone enanthate or other anabolic steroids. You can achieve a great and, above all, healthy body through regular training and a balanced diet.
However, if you are still interested in using steroids, it is crucial to do so properly and under medical supervision. Your health should always be the top priority.
