To stop the spread of COVID-19, wearing face masks is one of the most important measures. Let’s take a quick look at why you should absolutely do this when you're in public.
When you wear a mask over your mouth and nose and then cough, the spread of infectious aerosols is very effectively stopped—this should seem logical to everyone. I often notice while shopping that people dutifully wear their masks inside the store, but then take them off right outside and chat and laugh at very close distances. A little common sense should be applied here. Just because the law requires masks to be worn inside stores doesn’t mean you can’t get infected outside if you ignore recommendations where they still make sense.
Each of us, whether we are part of a high-risk group or not, has the responsibility to follow travel restrictions, distancing rules, and other government measures. Failing to comply with these measures can have serious consequences—if not for yourself, then for others.
And don’t think that just because you're not in a high-risk group or had an asymptomatic infection, you can’t suffer long-term damage. A study of asymptomatic people on the Diamond Princess cruise ship showed that over 50% of the cases examined had abnormal lung CT scans. The effects of COVID-19 could, in the future, show up in young people as an increase in diseases like strokes, thrombosis, and embolisms. So just wear your masks, keep your distance, and you’re good.
