Especially in autumn, when infection rates typically rise again, it is important to refresh COVID-19 and flu vaccinations. Recently, I received my fourth COVID-19 vaccine dose and will soon be getting the flu shot as well.
Just like in sports, a vaccination is training for the immune system to better fight infections. By getting vaccinated regularly, we strengthen our defenses and are better prepared for potential pathogens. Just as a boxer doesn’t enter the ring without training, no one should face infections unprepared.
Regardless of predictions about future infection waves or milder variants, it is advisable to take the additional booster for the immune system every year when the opportunity arises. In addition to personal protection against severe illness, vaccination also impacts the healthcare system by reducing severe cases and overloading.
Even before COVID-19, combating the flu during the autumn and winter months was a challenge. Therefore, stricter measures this year are also sensible to curb the spread of infections. High infection rates increase the risk of new variants emerging, as we have learned from the past. That’s why we should simply make sure to adhere to the usual hygiene measures that we are now all too familiar with.
