As an atheist, I don’t believe in God or an afterlife. Nevertheless, I find the phenomenon of near-death experiences intriguing. Are they really a glimpse into another reality or, more likely, just neurochemical processes in the brain?
What is a Near-Death Experience and How Does It Feel?
A near-death experience is a altered state of consciousness that people can undergo under extreme conditions, such as life-threatening illnesses, accidents, or during medical procedures. Reports from individuals who have had a near-death experience often include various sensations. These can involve the feeling of leaving one's body and observing it from above, the impression of traveling through a dark tunnel towards a light source, as well as encounters with deceased individuals or other spiritual beings. Some describe a rapid life review, often accompanied by a moral evaluation of their choices.
Many view near-death experiences as a spiritual or religious phenomenon. For some, they serve as evidence of an afterlife or a higher power. After such experiences, many report a changed perspective on life, a reduced fear of death, and an increased sense of spirituality.
The idea of an afterlife is appealing, but let’s take a look at what science has to say about it.
Scientific Perspectives
From a scientific standpoint, stress causes the body to release hormones like adrenaline, which can lead to an altered state of consciousness. This might explain some of the frequently described phenomena, such as time distortion or tunnel vision. Some theories suggest that changes in neurotransmitter balance, particularly the release of endorphins, could be responsible for these experiences. These neurochemical processes might alleviate pain and anxiety, inducing a sense of well-being.
My Personal Opinion
If there is life after death, I would be glad about it. But what is more likely? That there truly is an afterlife, or that our bodies, evolutionarily conditioned and unconsciously driven by superstition and neurochemical processes, simply ease the dying process? I tend to believe in the latter.

Closing Words
I find near-death experiences to be a fascinating topic, and I enjoy watching documentaries about them. I hope that future scientific research can shed more light on the subject.
