Lockdown in Austria Tightens: The Situation Comes to a Head

The recent measures to contain the pandemic seem to have had little effect so far. As suspected, Austria is now implementing further measures instead of easing restrictions. Let me briefly outline what we can expect in Austria.
Before you continue reading, please keep in mind that this is an earlier COVID-19 update and some of the information may no longer reflect the current situation. The information included was, to the best of my knowledge, current and accurate at the time of publication.
The number of new infections in Austria continues to rise alarmingly, and the country currently reports the highest case numbers per 1 million inhabitants worldwide.
It is even suspected that the actual number of infections is even higher, as testing capacities are reaching their limits. However, it is expected that in the future, an antigen rapid test will suffice to confirm an infection. Due to the currently limited capacities, it is particularly difficult to accurately track the spread of the virus.
In some Austrian states, the bed capacity in intensive care units is already fully utilized and regular hospital operations are being scaled back in favor of emergencies. This affects not only COVID-19 patients but also others in need of medical assistance. When hospitals are overwhelmed, it becomes difficult to provide everyone with the best possible treatment.
Even though many people may not fully feel the effects in their daily lives, the situation is serious. The previous reliance on personal responsibility alone has not been enough to curb the spread of the virus. Therefore, measures must be further tightened to protect the population and relieve the healthcare system.
