It doesn’t take long when sitting with colleagues or friends, each unpacking their packed lunch—most of which is quite hearty, featuring bread, lard, salami, a liter of cola, and then a donut for dessert. That seemingly small snack can easily contain over a thousand calories. Meanwhile, you sit there eating a light meal and pulling out your Coke Zero. Suddenly, the disdainful looks and comments come from some about how bad and toxic that sweetener in zero-calorie drinks is. All you wanted was to save those liquid calories found in sugary drinks while still enjoying something tasty.
In these moments, everyone suddenly becomes a nutrition expert, ignoring the fact that they are stuffing their faces with all kinds of foods. If only their claims were true, it wouldn’t be a problem, but the demonization of sweeteners couldn’t be more misguided. In my new article, I’ve compiled the facts about sweeteners to dispel the most common misconceptions and clarify that sweeteners can actually be a total game changer in nutrition and are health-wise not concerning in most cases.
